These buildings were constructed with some of the timber reclaimed following a windstorm that felled 42,500 hectares of forest in Italy.

An ambitious guidebook has been produced for cities that have committed to reducing the carbon footprint of housing in their communities. The book includes product reviews of construction alternatives to concrete, steel and drywall. The alternatives are grouped according to their use: structure or insulation or lining.

The handbook also provides some case studies of innovative projects, including policies and funding programs in use in European communities.

The last project in the handbook comes from Rovereto, Italy. It consists of 68 social rent homes in two buildings on a reclaimed industrial site. Each building is constructed with cross laminated timber. The buildings are pictured above.

You can access the guidebook at the Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance: New Handbook to Help Cities Use Bio-Based Building Materials

And here are two articles in Italian1 about the buildings in Rovereto:

one article in impresse ediliSocial housing a Rovereto: edificio in legno di nove piani and another article in ARCA: Social Housing Rovereto
