Camp Resolution, a homeless encampment in Sacramento, was closed on August 27, 2024. About 50 people were living there when trespassing notices were issued. Residents were offered space in emergency shelters, but these offers came with conditions that some Camp Resolution residents could not accept.
The City of Sacramento owns the Camp Resolution site. Given the timing of the closure, the US Supreme Court Ruling in the Grants Pass v Johnson case might have been a factor1. As well, California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, had just issued a decree that supports clearances. Then there’s the internal wrangle within the City2, which could also be in play.
When Camp Resolution closed, it had operated for two years and there were 800 people on the waiting list to move there. It sure seems like Camp Resolution, whatever its failings, was doing something right.
