A tiny house. Not all they're cracked up to be?

The august BBC has thrown the weight of its interest into a study exploring the ‘Pixie Magic’ style of tiny housing, including its many warts. Ideally those warts would be little white lumps on a scarlet toadstool cap above flower-boxed windows and a little arched door in the toadstool stem for pixies to come and go. Alas, current construction techniques tend to preclude this style of tiny house.

Before joining the BBC in its exploration of pros and cons of pixie magic tiny houses, you may need a brief reminder about very similar ‘ho hum’ tiny housing that has been around for nigh on a century. (Centuries, if we wish to include traveller housing in Europe).

‘Ho hum’ tiny housing is regularly featured in battered fashion following news reports of   tornados and floods. It comes in a variety of alternate names: campers, caravan, trailers, single-wides, double-wides, mobile homes and so on. Its habitat: trailer parks or caravan sites, or similarly named establishments. It is also found in obscure corners of farmer’s fields, and suburban and exurban driveways.

As you marvel over recent discoveries made about the benefits and drawbacks of pixie magic tiny houses, it is worth keeping in the back of your mind that most of this information has been known for ‘yonks’ a.k.a. ‘donkey’s years’, to use an old English expression. That information has accumulated thanks to the experiences of many, many, many people living in the boring old ho-hum type of tiny house.
