Back in the days when socialism was a legitimate political expression, not the gateway drug to communist hell that it became in during the Cold War, socialist leaning organizations such as the Nonpartisan League championed needs like decent schools for children.

Only a month or so away from the 100th anniversary of the journal edition pictured above, it’s worth scanning the column of articles featured within it. The final one? “Decent Schools For Farm Children.”

A different time and place, but it seems that the cry for decent schools and as well, decent living conditions, continues to live on in the demands of the Chicago Teachers Union.

This in spite of the fact that teachers in Chicago are bound by law to bargain only for wages and benefits, not to try and better the housing and schooling of homeless students and their families.
