Capitalist democracies are committed to the right of all to speculate in a free housing market. But profit-taking is currently driving up housing prices beyond the reach of growing numbers of people in many countries. Increasingly, it seems that the human right to shelter for all can only be satisfied by somehow removing housing and land from the free market. Here’s one American city’s idea of how to accomplish the task.
