Fannie Mae headquarters, Reston, VA. Vilified for errors made leading up to the 2008 Housing Crisis, Fannie Mae still plays a vital role in securing US affordable housing loans.

The American Federal National Mortgage Association, commonly called Fannie Mae, is looking to support new ideas for sustainable affordable housing development, by announcing an Innovation Challenge, part of a Sustainable Communities Initiative.

Entitled “The Challenge: Healthy Affordable Housing!” they are making a ten million dollar commitment to fund new affordable housing ideas in response to one or more of the following statements:

“How might we use innovative technology and design to improve affordable homes in order to better support health, promote overall wellness or prevent disease and illness?”

“How might finance vehicles be leveraged to incentivize the creation of affordable homes that promote health and wellness?”

“How might we foster design that promotes diverse, sustainable, multigenerational affordable communities in which all individuals can remain a vibrant part of their community through every stage of life?”

Fannie Mae, a U.S. Government Sponsored Enterprise (GSE)  is looking towards “breaking down silos to work with new partners.”

How far outside the Fannie Mae silo is your organization? They’re looking for ideas “from anywhere — including from those outside of the housing industry.”

Affordable housing not just a US national crisis but also a global crisis. Is it worth putting forward new ideas from some distance, say another national perspective? Undoubtedly the Sustainable Communities Initiative will be receptive to new ideas from anywhere. Unlikely, however, that ‘outside the silo’ stretches to funding support beyond the US!
