Consider Sacramento County. It is bound together unto eternity with the City of Sacramento, thanks to the territory they share, along with physical and social interests. Might we expect, then, a spirit of togetherness as they deal with common problems?
Unfortunately, their interaction more recalls words from the children’s hymn, “You in your small corner, and I in mine.”
The number of people who are homeless is Sacramento County is growing, like much of the rest of the state of California. The County recently decided that the City of Sacramento, far from being a partner in tackling local homelessness problems, was actually a big part of the problem itself.
So much so that Sacramento County saw fit to sue the City of Sacramento on September 19, 2023.
Three months on, it seems that Sacramento County has not quite finished the scope of their complaint. A few days ago the county amended its lawsuit against the city. In addition to all the other complaints, the county accuses the city of despoiling the wilderness and polluting the local rivers.
While Sacramento County conjures up images of the unhoused wading out into the river for a good old poop, Sacramento City is more inclined to prefer a 2021 report that blames birds, and particularly geese for polluting rivers in the County.
Are these two combatants out of their depth? Can two regional authorities tackle and solve problems associated with a need for mammoth amounts affordable housing? Neither appears to have the resources to do more than dicker about polluted local rivers, a problem that has nothing to do with unhoused people. An American war against homelessness needs be fought and mastered about a human right to adequate shelter, not geese pooping in local rivers.
