Housing As A Child Health Care Investment

“Affordable and stable housing plays a critical role in supporting the health and wellbeing of children.” This is the conclusion reached by a recent report by the American National Housing Conference (NHC) based on data gathered by Children’s HealthWatch, a non-partisan network of doctors and healthcare workers.

Previous research by Children’s HealthWatch indicated that the health of young children suffered if a mother was homeless before or after a child was born. After studying children whose precarious housing situation was stabilized by housing or rental assistance, they have been able to document positive health benefits for the children, as well as savings for health care systems.
