There are significant benefits to building affordable housing in Sydney, Australia's downtown.
It’s an old story which still holds. You have to spend money to make money.
A consortium of non-profit, government and industry groups found this out after they commissioned study recently completed by the City Futures Research Centre at the University of New South Wales, Australia.
The research study explored the impact of investing in 125,000 more units of affordable housing in the city of Sydney. The investment is significant. But so is the payoff. The benefits of the investment in housing are comparable to those in roads, bridges, public transit and other infrastructure.
Public investment to build affordable housing closer to the downtown translates to better access to job opportunities and shorter commutes. These and other benefits are projected to continue for 40 years.
