A new British report by the NAO (National Audit Office) suggests that prisons now drive 90 per cent of inmates mad, or turns them into drug addicts, or both. Seemingly as a result of drugs and drug-fueled violence, the suicide rate in prisons is skyrocketing.

And after the survivors have served their time and returned to so-called ‘civilization’ of the un-incarcerated world, what then? The suicide rate of freed prisoners continues to rise as they struggle unsuccessfully to cope with mental problems and unsuitable housing. A recent report painted a damning indictment of the agencies responsible for ex-prisoner rehabilitation: of 98 homeless ex-prisoners surveyed, only two had been found accommodation before they were released. Welcome to home on the mean streets!
