Lured by a mass of tasty seniors, will bogeymen devour their sanctimonious neighbours too?

NIMBY: Not in My Back Yard. Part of an ongoing collection of articles exploring some of the many ways that a worldwide affordable housing crisis is opposed.

Well, we’ve sunk so low as to offer up a hearsay NIMBY. We’d rather not, of course, but in this case the NIMBY excuse was so plump and tasty that we couldn’t resist.

‘Those darn NIMBYites’ articles pop up everywhere in national and international news media these days, seeking to enlighten local readers about the obstructionist habits of neighbourhood defenders who recognize the need for more affordable housing, as long as it gets built somewhere else.

At the start of one such recent New York article, there is an anecdote about a seniors affordable housing project that was opposed by neighbourhood NIMBYites because it would bring more crime to the ‘hood’.

Break-and-enter geriatrics, smashing, grabbing, then tottering away using walkers, wheelchairs and souped up golf carts?
