
Like everyone else, those from social and cultural minorities can be attracted to both the anonymity and opportunity of large cities. A voyage of discovery to such a place can be both an adventure and for some, a nightmare that can leave them shipwrecked on an unfriendly — or just plain indifferent — shore.
Vancouver, British Columbia, regularly wins places in annual ‘contests’ for the honour of being one of the world’s most expensive cities. This can be particularly sobering and challenging for people with alternative lifestyles.
To Vancouver’s credit, however, it has paid more than lip service to this problem, recognizing a need and a civic responsibility to support a safe harbour for people in the LGBTQ community if their life adventure runs on the rocks.
After literally years of work, Vancouver has finally put together a funding package that promises to do justice to the affordable housing needs of some of the city’s LGBTQ residents.
