Here are some images, with accompanying comments, taken during an encampment demolition in Halifax. The next steps, rendered inevitably off-camera, reflect the displacement of former encampment residents towards literally nowhere at all.

Ephemeral alternatives are regularly offered to displaced encampment-dwellers. The classic examples are notional residence in homeless shelters which, oh dear, turn out to be full up, and/or unsafe. Destroying encampments and displacing residents truly threatens basic health and survival of those whose physical security, however fragile, has been destroyed.

Encampment clearances are not unique to Canada. Are we witnessing the social failures of an entire continent? Check it out for yourself via a YouTube video from Global News: Halifax’s struggle to help unhoused represents growing problem across Canada
